*FRACKING: Does it Pose a Risk to our Environment?

This diverse panel of Colorado State University experts will discuss the potential impacts of new techniques for oil and gas extraction on soil, water, air quality, and biodiversity, as well as greenhouse gas emissions associated with natural gas gathering and processing. Free and open to the public. Part of the “Managing the Planet Panel Series” hosted by CSU’s School of Global Environmental Sustainability. *“Concern for Human Rights in D.C. and Hollywood” with Michael Haas

On March 11, the Department of Communication Studies is hosting a talk by Michael Haas, an expert in the area of international human rights, who has recently turned his attention to popular representations — motion pictures in particular — that have played have played a role in bringing rights violations to light. His talk is the second in a series of invited lectures that are concerned with the convergence of humanitarian advocacy and mass media — talks that are made possible through the support of the Morgan Chair fund. Dr. Haas has edited and authored over 40 books on the topics of government and politics, and in 2010 he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Isatou Ceesay is the leader of a movement to collect, wash and recycle plastic bags into crocheted purses and other gifts.  She is also now featured in a children’s book: http://oneplasticbag.com/.

The Gambia is notorious for human rights issues especially when it comes to women.  Projects like Ceesay’s allow women to earn money help women to be able to get basic literacy education and stand up for themselves, not to mention the environmental benefits. “How a Study Abroad Adventure Will Make You a Phenomenal Leader, Entrepreneur or Job Candidate” with Matt Shoup

Matt Shoup, a 2003 FLL alum in Spanish, studied abroad in Alcalá, Spain.
He now runs a very successful painting business “M & E,” is a small business coach, and donates very generously to scholarships for FLL students to study Spanish abroad.

 

I will be sharing my experience studying abroad in Spain during my 2002 spring semester at Colorado State University.  During this message, I will share all of my most memorable experiences, stories and a few embarrassing moments.  I will also share some of the biggest take aways, lessons learned as well as things nobody will ever tell you about studying abroad.

 

This message will teach students how a study abroad adventure will make you a phenomenal leader, entrepreneur and/or job candidate.  We will also have lots of fun in the process! All are welcome.

  1. Colorado School of English Summer Internship

CSE is hiring for a summer intern to assist at our language school in Denver, Colorado. The intern will gain professional experience managing social media platforms and online marketing, as well as coordinating school activities and special events. Please see the attached grant applications for the International Development Studies travel grant and the Von Grunebaum Award.  The International Development studies travel grant is available to faculty and students associated with the International Development Studies program for research or conference travel related to international development.  The Von Grunebaum Award is for an outstanding student in Asian Studies.  More information can be found at CSU’s International Initiatives Website.  The deadline for all grants is March 25, 2015.
