A panel discussion featuring Dr. Ruth Alexander and Dr. Adrian Howkins, faculty in History, and Dane Vanhoozer, History graduate student and USFS firefighter. The panelists will offer brief presentations that demonstrate how historians are drawing on (and contributing to) the work of resource managers and ecologists while researching the history of extreme environments and events. We look forward to a lively discussion with the audience after our presentations. Presented by the CSU Public Lands History Center / the American West Program.

 

*Bangladeshi Garment Workers Speak Out!

Bangladeshi labor organizer Kalpona Akter, and Mahinur Begum, a garment worker and survivor of the deadly Rana Plaza collapse, will speak about their struggle to force brands like VF Corporation, the parent company of JanSport, to sign a legally binding agreement to improve apparel factory safety and working conditions in Bangladesh, as well as what students can do to make CSU sweat-free!

This event is free and open to the public. UNA Dinner to Benefit Children in Syria

Great Food—Important Cause!! The United Nations Association of Northern Colorado is hosting a dinner to benefit children in Syria. The dinner will feature Syrian food catered by Fatafeat restaurant in Fort Collins.  Also an acclaimed Syrian American Poet, Amal Kassir, will recite her poetry and show pictures of Syria. This is a fundraiser to benefit UNICEF in Syria.  The dinner will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 East Drake, Fort Collins. Suggested donation is $25. This event will feature traditional Korean music and dance by Lee Mi Sook Dance Company of South Korea. Hosted by National Unification Advisory Council Denver Chapter, sponsored by the Korea Foundation and collaborated by CKA, KSODA CSKA and Center for Asian Studies at CU Boulder. In honor of American veterans of the Korean War. Featured performances include the Boochaechoom (Fan Dance), the Suljanggo (Solo Drumming), the Taepyeongmu (Dance of Peace), and the Arirang.

Open to all majors, Career Tracks in Asian Studies will introduce you to professionals with Asian expertise who work in international business and in organizations that build local connections with Asia. Come learn how you can apply your Asian interests in a global career! This semester’s panel features Jan Goerzen, Event and Marketing Manager at WorldDenver, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing a deep understanding of global affairs and cultures; Stanley Harsha, a retired diplomat and journalist who has international experiences ranging from reporting for Reuters in Venezuela to working as a diplomat in Indonesia; and David Wagner, a leading media and business communication consultant who conducts seminars worldwide and offers personal coaching to global business and political leaders.

  1. Submissions Wanted for the Spring International Studies Newsletter

International Studies Majors and Alumni are encouraged to submit articles and images relating to their work, research, or travel experiences for the upcoming newsletter. Articles should be approximately 500 words. For more information or to submit, contact Dr. Andrea Williams: Andrea.Williams@colostate.edu.

Please see the attached grant applications for the International Development Studies travel grant and the Von Grunebaum Award.  The International Development studies travel grant is available to faculty and students associated with the International Development Studies program for research or conference travel related to international development.  The Von Grunebaum Award is for an outstanding student in Asian Studies.  More information is attached and can be found at CSU’s International Initiatives Website.  The deadline for all grants is March 25, 2015.

 

  1. United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program

The United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program will be offered from Monday, June 8 to Friday, June 12, 2015, by the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and the United Nations Foundation – United Nations Association of the USA.  Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this unique program immerses participants in the political dynamics of the United Nations. Participants will attend official sessions at United Nations headquarters as well as briefings at UNA-USA.  Directed by Dr. Courtney Smith, Senior Associate Dean at the School of Diplomacy, and Ms. Minh-Thu Pham, Senior Director of Policy at the United Nations Foundation, the course is designed to familiarize students with the inner workings of the United Nations by bringing them together with distinguished practitioners working in the field of multilateral diplomacy.  The program is structured around a series of seminars led by U.N. officials and representatives of governments and civil society on a wide range of global issues currently on the U.N. agenda.
